Student Employee Profile: Sara Vien
Sara Vien is a recent graduate (June 2022) and student employee in the Tax Reporting and Compliance unit within the Department of Finance. This interview was conducted during the 2021-22 academic year.
What is your major/minor?
I am a double major, getting a Bachelor of Science in Managerial Economics and a Bachelor of Arts in Communications.
What do you do for FOA?
I work for the Tax Reporting and Compliance Unit helping international students, staff and faculty with their tax compliance process. I help them through the process of how to gain access to the GLACIER system and all the documents they need to submit.
What has your experience been like working as a student employee for Tax Reporting and Compliance?
It has been a great experience. Everyone has been very supportive and I have learned a lot of key transferable skills. I really enjoy working closely with my manager who really values my opinions and feedback.
How has this position helped prepare you for your career?
I have been able to gain leadership skills and expand my responsibilities. My communication skills and relationship building skills have grown and helped me seek advice on my weaknesses and get insight on my strengths. I’ve also been able to expand my business background and problem-solving skills.
What is your job opportunity and what does it entail?
I have a job lined up with Google as an Associate Financial Analyst. The first two years I am there will basically be a training program where I rotate every six months between four different teams. Once the two years is over, I will be placed in a permanent role based on my performance and experience in those two years. My experience with TR&C will prepare me for a possible tax rotation for six months during that training time. I am excited to see the different teams I will get to work with!
