You Can Talk to Me: Mental Health First Aid with an Inclusive Focus

In a partnership between FOA and Human Resources, the Institutional Development, Accountability and Responsible Engagement (IDARE) Committee is proud to launch "You Can Talk to Me," a new initiative that enhances the Mental Health First Aid training course to better support our campus community and foster a workplace culture where mental health and inclusion go hand in hand.

Mental Health First Aid training teaches participants how to recognize signs of mental health challenges, provide initial support, and connect individuals to appropriate resources. Through the "You Can Talk to Me" project, the training now includes content that centers cultural considerations and the lived experiences of our community members.

New additions include:

  • Cultural differences in communication and expressions of distress
  • The impact of calling 911 in certain communities
  • Helpful vs. unhelpful responses to mental health concerns
  • An enhanced local resource handout for Davis, Woodland and Sacramento

Supporting mental health begins with awareness. I’m proud that Human Resources has developed a training program that empowers the UC Davis community to recognize the signs of mental health challenges. Being prepared to respond fosters a more resilient and compassionate workplace — especially during these challenging times.” —Clare Shinnerl, Vice Chancellor of Finance, Operations and Administration

This initiative is part of our broader IDARE commitment to creating a workplace where everyone feels they belong. We invite you to take the training, wear the pin and help build a more supportive UC Davis.
