More Than Changing a Light Bulb

So, how many people does it take to change a light bulb? On the UC Davis campus, the answer is four.

Our four lighting technicians maintain more than 190,000 indoor lights across 1,000 campus buildings. Before learning about their work, I assumed replacing a burned-out light was as simple as swapping a bulb. It turns out keeping a campus of our size illuminated is far more complex.

Many of the fluorescent lights we've relied on for decades are no longer manufactured. As California transitions to more energy-efficient lighting, a burned-out fluorescent fixture often can't be replaced with a simple LED bulb, especially in older buildings with aging electrical systems.

Even a routine repair can require upgraded fixtures, smart controls, occupancy sensors, new wiring and other improvements to meet today's energy standards. Technicians also ensure old lighting components are disposed of safely and in compliance with environmental regulations.

Their work goes well beyond changing light bulbs. They maintain lighting systems that span decades of construction that has resulted in UC Davis having 20 different lighting control systems! The team also keeps up with evolving technology and changing regulations. No two days are alike. One day they might be working in a lecture hall, the next in a research laboratory or testing emergency lighting.

Replacing burned-out lights is only part of the job. The team is also leading proactive, long-term efforts to replace aging, inefficient lighting systems with energy-saving LEDs. Because these upgrades can be expensive and disruptive, they're phased in over time according to funding, staffing, safety priorities and operational needs.

The next time I walk into a room and the lights quietly blink on, I'll have a new appreciation for the people whose expertise makes that everyday moment seem effortless.
