Request a Name Change of a Unit, Program, Property or Facility by Following These Steps
The following process summarizes the steps to administratively change the name of an administrative unit, a non-academic program, or physical assets such as buildings, laboratories, conference rooms, courtyards, landscape collections and more. A detailed process description also is available for reference and covers the steps to request a change to the following name types. - Administrative: Non-gift related names.
- Administrative naming requests are managed by Finance, Operations and Administration (FOA). Administrative naming requests are evaluated based on long-term campus plans, community benefits and impact, and campus naming conventions. Proposals must be reviewed and approved by unit head.
- Honorific: Naming in honor without involving a gift.
- Honorific naming requests are managed by Finance, Operations and Administration (FOA). Honorific naming proposals are evaluated based on the contributions to the university mission. Proposals must be reviewed and approved by unit head.
- Philanthropic: Recognizing gift/private support.
- Philanthropic naming requests are managed by Development and Alumni Relations (DEVAR). The Philanthropic Board for Naming reviews all naming proposals for gifts. Proposals are evaluated based on merits, appropriateness, fundraising strategy and gift alignment with university mission.
- Sponsorship: Naming tied to financial transactions and advertising.
- Sponsorship naming requests are managed by the University Preferred Partnership Program (UP3) Governance Structure. Proposals are evaluated to ensure transparency, fairness and compliance with university guidelines.
