The Office of the Vice Chancellor and Chief Financial Officer (VC-CFO) has successfully employed two cycles of student interns, with a few new individuals starting this quarter.
As a priority for Vice Chancellor Dave Lawlor, this integrative program is intended to create challenging learning opportunities for both graduate and undergraduate junior and senior students, putting their academic experience to work on impactful key campus initiatives.
“The VC-CFO internship program has given me the wonderful opportunity to immerse myself into the university beyond academics,” Kristine Severo, a fourth-year Managerial Economics student, shares about her work with Diane Davies-Conley, Assistant Vice Chancellor and Chief of Staff to Dave Lawlor, UC Davis’s Chief Financial Officer.
Interns work on a range of projects such as researching and implementing operational benchmarks, developing data analytics and resource allocation models, and formulating recommendations to improve services and operations.
In addition to learning valuable skills and accomplishing independent and collaborative projects, VC-CFO interns develop mentor relationships with influential administrative leaders.
Hampton Sublett, Executive Director of the Administrative Reorganization and Transformation unit, speaks positively about being a mentor to Greg Elliott, a fourth year Managerial Economics major, who has supported the facilitation and execution of the university’s Financial Sustainability Action Plan (FSAP), an initiative to generate $250 million annually at maturity to invest in the university.
“Greg is exactly the caliber intern, student and person we want to have at UC Davis,” Sublett described. “I’m humbled by his drive and eagerness to take on new challenges.”
Another VC-CFO intern, Daisy Li, third-year Managerial Economics undergraduate, works with Shared Services Center’s Director, Sara Reed, and Operations Manager, Megan Villasenor, to develop a benchmarking project through metrics analysis and data visualization.
This quarter, the VC-CFO office has added two communication interns: Jamie Marzouk and Lauren Riebs.
Jamie Marzouk, a senior Managerial Economics student with experience in marketing and outreach, will be working with Katie Hetrick, Director of Marketing and Communications for the UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden.
“I’m excited about promoting all the work UC Davis students, faculty and staff accomplish within our campus environment,” shares Jamie. “It’s not just a pretty place, we are using landscapes across campus as a tool for sharing everything that makes UC Davis great.”
Meanwhile, Lauren, a junior transfer student studying Communication, has a professional background with public relations and journalism and will be working with BreAnda Northcutt, Communications Director of the VC-CFO office to help build positive awareness for the division and its departments.
