Leonore C. De Leon Lead Financial Analyst for the Campus Planning Business Office and provides business services to Landscape Services, Civil and Industrial Services, Landscape Architecture, and the Campus Sign Shop.
When did you join the University?
I was hired by UC Davis in June 1986.
What's your day-to-day role in stewarding university resources?
As the lead financial analyst for the Campus Planning Business Office, I manage the daily business operations for various university organizations.
The organizations I manage include the following: Landscape Services, Civil & Industrial Services, Landscape Architecture and the Campus Sign Shop. As the lead financial analyst, I’m responsible for financial and budgetary analysis, fiscal management planning and analysis, and budget and rate development.
Working smarter is the key to managing limited university resources, and so I strive to improve financial processes by incorporating changes that make sense, yet ensure fiscal integrity. For example, I led the effort in transitioning the Campus Planning business team from the Shared Services Center Case Management purchasing system, to the improved Online Pre-Purchasing system. Also, in the near future I will lead the Campus Planning business team to the Adaptive Budget Management tool, which will enable staff to produce more advanced budget and financial variance reports in less time.
What's an example of how you delight customers?
On July 1st of 2014, I acquired a new manager to whom I provided operational financial reports on a monthly basis. Being that the manager was new to the organization, I could tell the manager was a bit concerned on how my projections would go over. I’m pleased to report that at year-end the actual account balances for the organization exceeded the projected credit balances and the manager was elated.
What do you like best about working at UC Davis?
What I enjoy the best about working at UC Davis is sharing the financial knowledge that I have acquired over the past 29 years with new, upcoming staff. I also appreciate the staff development courses that are offered to help staff enhance their careers.
What's the most challenging part of your job?
The most challenging part of my job is meeting the different deadlines for various managers. I manage the challenge by being very flexible and preparing daily for the unexpected.
