Fred Gallardo

Fred is the Service Manager for Fleet Services, a department of Facilities Management.

When did you join the university?
I joined UC Davis in March of 2016.

What's your day-to-day role in stewarding university resources?
As Service Manager of Fleet Services, I manage the repair and maintenance of about 780 vehicles and also coordinate with departments the repair and maintenance of about 709 department owned vehicles, carts, trailers, boats, and some UC Berkley vehicles. These repairs would not be possible without our talented team of technicians and fleet staff. We are proud to say that the shop achieved renewal of our ASE Blue Seal of Excellence certification, which is a huge achievement in the repair industry. I also maintain the Bureau of Automotive Repair’s SMOG compliance, CHP and DOT terminal inspection compliance, Air Quality Management District compliance, and Environmental Health Department compliance. All of these programs help to maintain a safe and environmentally friendly fleet.

"Because of the research nature of this campus, I see customers with problems that I have never ran into before."

What's an example of how you delight customers?
One of our larger customers is Facilities Management and they have vehicles that are unique to each of the trades. I had an Elevator Technician needing several cabinets and shelving that was necessary to transport tools and parts. Working with the technician, I was able to have cabinets and shelving that fit his needs in a timely manner. Since each request for equipment is unique, I work with the customer to make sure that they have a safe solution to meet their needs.

What do you like best about working at UC Davis?
The best part about working at UC Davis is giving others the tools to help them become successful in their job. I enjoy that hundreds of faculty, staff, and students are using vehicles that are provided by Fleet Services to help them accomplish their work and research.

What's the most challenging part of your job?
The most challenging part of this job is time management and problem solving issues. Fleet is often looked at to solve the needs of customers who need a solution to problems in transporting people, animals, objects, and a myriad of other items. Because of the research nature of this campus, I see customers with problems that I have never ran into before. This also offers a rewarding opportunity for me to be able to provide the solution to our customers. Time management is something that I constantly have to look at and re-prioritize based on different situations that can arise day to day.

Tell us one thing about yourself that most people wouldn't know.
I have a passion for technology. When smartphones first came out, I was one of those persons that had to have the latest phone.

What's something you like to do when you aren't at work?
I love to cook and eat good food. Several times a month, I will look online for recipes and then customize the recipe to my personal style.
